Learning objectives
To provide students in the fields of history, art history, and literature with the foundation for researching, reading, and transcribing archival documentation useful for their research; to search for a manuscript in paper and digital catalogs; to formulate essential descriptions of a manuscript; and to navigate the reading and transcription of major documentary and book documents from the 15th to the 20th centuries.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prerequisites; basic knowledge of Latin is preferable.
Program
The course is a workshop-based program for a total of 36 hours, with a final written exam. The first module, consisting of five lessons, includes the illustration, reading, and transcription of various types of modern documents (registers and land registers, wills, notarial deeds, court documents, and minutes) and their related research methods. The second module, consisting of three lessons, includes the illustration, reading, and transcription of modern and contemporary documents (letters, office documentation, including typewritten ones, historical maps, and land registers) and their related research methods. The third module, consisting of two lessons, includes an illustration of how to search for codices through paper and digital catalogs; the main codicological and textual aspects of the manuscript book for the given time period, with a view to formulating a useful description for cataloging purposes. The discussion will be based specifically on several codices held at the State Archives of Verona. Teaching: The course is coordinated by Dr. Francesca Carnazzi, a research fellow at the University of Florence, a subject expert in "Philology of Italian Literature" at the University of Verona, and a collaborator at the LaMeDan laboratory. She will teach the lessons with the scientific and teaching collaboration of Dr. Andrea Brugnoli, professor of Humanities Computing at the University of Verona, an officer of the University Library System at the LaMeDan laboratory, and editorial director of "Studi Veronesi," and Dr. Chiara Bianchini, director of the State Archives of Verona and professor of Latin Paleography at the School of Archives, Paleography, and Diplomatics of the State Archives of Mantua. Other instructors, experts in specific aspects of the documentation covered in the course, will also participate. Course duration: Each module consists of 12 sessions of 3 academic hours each, with the last two dedicated to the final exam, conducted in seminar format. For a total of 36 hours of attendance per module, plus 40 hours of independent work to prepare the final report. Students may attend one or both modules, depending on their individual learning needs. Class schedule and location: The sessions will take place between February and May 2026; all sessions will be held on Thursday afternoons, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, primarily at the State Archives of Verona.

The course is laboratory-based for a total of 36 hours with a final written exam.
Learning assessment procedures
The final exam, lasting two lessons, consists of the transcription, summary, and commentary of a document, or the description of a manuscript accompanied by a short transcription, chosen freely by the students based on their interests. The papers will be presented and discussed in class during these two seminar-style meetings and will be approved by the supervisor.
