Learning objectives

The course main purpose is to introduce to the knowledge of the most important pictorial technique used in the Middle Ages and Modern times, as well as the various literary sources and bibliography of this topic.  At the end of the course the student should prove to be conscious of the operational and material peculiarities of the different techniques and should also be able to critically think over the various cases presented during the lessons.

Program

The course will illustrate the main painting techniques used in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age through lectures, providing the essential methodological tools for understanding the subject. To complement the introductory part, several case studies will be explored, allowing for a deeper understanding of specific techniques while also introducing aspects related to individual cultural contexts, diagnostics, and the history of restoration and conservation. The topics covered in class will be illustrated through slides accompanied by explanatory captions, which will also be made available to non-attending students via e-learning. The main topics covered in the course will be the following, in order: - tools for understanding artistic techniques: written sources and diagnostic analyses - mural painting - panel painting - canvas painting. When preparing for the exam, it is recommended that students keep in mind the above-mentioned sequence of topics, which corresponds to the order in which the lectures will be held and the points entered into the e-learning.

Didactic methods

The course will consist of lectures supported by images, explanatory PowerPoint presentations, video supplements, web-based courses, and analysis of specific case studies. Recording of lectures is not provided; in cases where this is the case (certified positive for Covid-19), remediation arrangements will be agreed upon with the instructor.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be oral, with open-ended questions on the topics covered in class and the reading list indicated in the syllabus. Students who do not attend class are reminded that the reading list must be supplemented with the essays indicated in the reading list. The final grade is expressed out of thirtieths. The length of the exam is directly proportional to the student's demonstrated level of preparation (up to a maximum of 30 minutes of discussion with the instructor).

Evaluation criteria

The exam is intended to assess students' knowledge of the topics covered during the lectures, their study of the bibliography indicated in the syllabus, and their ability to critically discuss the case studies proposed during the course, as well as their correct use of technical vocabulary.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed in thirtieths.
