Learning objectives

The lessons provide an outline of the main issues and tendencies of the historical reconstruction in the Greek and Latin culture. After the course the students should be able to: - have a general overview of the characteristics of Greek historiography; - understand and discuss reading on Greek historiography; - discuss main aspects of the course texts.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Familiarity with ancient Greek culture.

Program

We will analyze the belief of blood pollution following homicide, and the necessary purification rites. We will study both literary and epigraphic sources. The course will explore how legal and religious spheres were interconnected in ancient Greek culture. All primary sources will be read in translation.
