Learning objectives
The course aims to offer a knowledge of formal structures of Italian literature, with particular attention to poetic metric, and to encourage the ability to autonomously analyze texts. Specific targets: 1) provide a methodical approach to the metric system of Italian, in its different components; 2) conduct a detailed analysis of one metric genre, which shows the relations with the other elements of style as a system (language, argumentative processes, discursive setting). By the end of the course, students should be able to apply the acquired knowledge, and to autonomously carry out an analysis of the formal features of an Italian poetic text, as an essential element for its general interpretation.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of the history of the Italian language from its origins to modernity. General skills related to Italian linguistics and Italian literature.
Program
The course adopts a predominantly inductive approach and is divided into two thematic areas. In the first part (22 hours), starting with the reading of some exemplary texts from the Italian poetic tradition, from Dante to Leopardi, the fundamentals and main features of the Italian metrical system will be addressed: verse and prosody, rhyme, metrical forms, metre and rhythm. The second part (14 hours) will focus on a specific metrical form, the sonnet, investigating the following aspects: structure; origin and history; function in the overall metrical system; relationships between metre and other components of poetic discourse (syntax, textuality and rhetoric). Here too, priority will be given to the direct reading of texts, with analysis of a series of exemplary samples distributed chronologically between the 13th and 16th centuries.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
With regard to attending students, teaching methods consist of lectures, in which constant attention will be paid to the formal interpretation of texts, understood as the starting point and end point of the analytical process. Active student participation will be encouraged in the classroom, giving them the opportunity to test their acquired knowledge through metrical analysis tests.
The e-learning platform (Moodle) is used for active communication between the lecturer and students regarding the bibliography, study topics, and any changes to lecture or office hours.
Throughout the academic year, individual office hours managed by the lecturer are also available at the times indicated on their personal web page, which is constantly updated.
For non-attending students, the teaching methods consist of teacher support for an updated textbook study programme. Any further updates will be made available to students in good time via the e-learning platform.
At the end of the course, the teacher will publish on the e-learning platform a detailed list of all the topics that will be covered in the exam and will specify in detail how to study the bibliography included in the programme.
Learning assessment procedures
For all students, whether attending or not attending, the assessment of learning outcomes includes an oral examination.
The examination covers all topics in the programme and is divided into two parts, reflecting the two thematic areas of the programme:
• assessment of the ability to recognise a metrical form and analyse its internal components, in particular its rhyme-syllabic pattern and the rhythmic treatment of at least one of its verses.
• assessment of the knowledge acquired on the sonnet and, in particular, the ability to place its achievements in a historical context and analyse some exemplary cases.
For Erasmus students, the lecturer will clarify the content and procedures of the exam during the lesson.
Evaluation criteria
Objectives of the exam:
- to verify analytical knowledge of the program topics.
- To verify the ability to reflect and elaborate in relation to some problematic points.
- To verify the operational skills acquired in the formal analysis of poetic texts.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
A maximum of 15 points out of 30 is awarded for each of the two parts.
The sum of the scores for the two assessments will form the final mark, expressed out of 30.
