Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the fundamentals of Chinese phonetics, writing and sentence structure. The aim is to initiate students into learning spoken and written Chinese, creating the conditions for independent use of Putonghua (Standard Mandarin Chinese) language skills. At the end of the course, students will be able to interact in simple conversations about everyday life situations, read and understand short and simple texts, and will also have acquired the basic syntactic structures of the simple sentence and the formative principles of Chinese characters, their classification and structure. Students at the end of the course will have achieved a level of language proficiency corresponding to an HSK2 certificate, i.e., an A2 level in the international classification.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Fundamentals of grammatical parsing.
As stipulated by the “Normative handbook for Foreign Languages and Literature students”, the validity of the A2 language proficiency certificate obtained after October 1, 2024, is 2 years from the date of its award.
Program
The course focusses on the study of basic linguistic aspects, including at the level of morphology and syntax. Notions about the Chinese language and its evolution, its writing system, and general linguistic aspects are also covered. Students’ participation to classes does not affect the focus of the course.

Didactic methods
Classes are taught in person, unless otherwise stipulated. The instructor will use PPTs and other teaching material that will be uploaded to Moodle or otherwise pointed to the students.
Learning assessment procedures
The final examination consists of written a theoretical-practical test (grammar, translation, general knowledge of Chinese linguistics, etc.). Test will have a duration of about 60 minutes. Test will have a duration of about 60 minutes.
During the exam session, candidates are required to present and attach the A2 language certificate or the corresponding equivalence certificate to the exam paper; otherwise, they will not be allowed to take the exam.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Arithmetic average of the score (converted into thirtieths as per the “Normative handbook for Foreign Languages and Literature students”) obtained in the A2 language certification taken at the CLA or equivalent, and the score obtained in the Chinese Language 1 test taken at the Department. The exam score is expressed out of thirty. The exam is passed with a score equal to or greater than 18/30.
