Learning objectives

The course aims at providing students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce with an adequate knowledge of the Spanish culture of different periods, focusing on its literary, historical, geographical and anthropological aspects. At the end of the course, students will acquire a sound knowledge of the issues covered by the module (historical and cultural context, main writers/texts/movements/genres of the period examined). With regard to the applied and communication skills, students will be able to critically comment the primary texts listed in the syllabus, in relation both to their historical and cultural context and literary specificities, as well as to express the acquired knowlegde in a clear and consistent way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

In compliance with the prerequisites established by the Academic Regulations, students may take the exam for this course after passing the exams in "Spanish Literature and Culture 1" and "Spanish Language 1".

Program

"Cervantes's Work as a Perspective on the Literary Genres of the Golden Age"
This course aims to provide an introduction to Spanish literature, history, and culture of the Golden Age. Specifically, it proposes a study of the literary genres of the 16th and 17th centuries, beginning with the perspective and work of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Quixote, which will serve as a starting point for reading the period's canonical works.
The program is divided into 3 parts:
1) Notes from the origins to the Renaissance: historical-cultural context, poetry of the origins, epic, romancero/cancionero, reading: La Celestina
2) Full Renaissance: historical-cultural context, Italianizing poetry, Cervantes and the novelistic genres of the LotO, readings from: Amadis de Gaula, Lazarillo de Tormes, Los siete libros de Diana, El Abencerraje, Clareo y Florisea, La Galatea, Don Quijote, Novelas Ejemplares, Persiles.
3) The Baroque: historical-cultural context, poetry between conceptism and culteranism, the Comedia Nueva, readings: Lope de Vega, Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña - Tirso de Molina, El burlador de Sevilla (student's choice).
A detailed summary of the topics covered, along with the complete schedule of teaching activities, will be provided at the beginning of the course. The literature history textbooks and other scheduled texts will be indicated by the instructor and are available at the University Libraries.

Didactic methods

Attending Students: The course will consist of lectures with active student participation. Classes will be held in Italian. Course materials will be uploaded to the course's Moodle platform with a sequential number corresponding to the course module.
Non-attending Students: This program is also valid for non-attending students, who, however, are asked to contact the instructor during office hours.
Individual office hours, managed by the instructor, are available throughout the academic year during the hours listed on the website (with a specific appointment required) and are regularly updated. Students who need to make up missed lessons may contact the instructor.
Teaching Support: Supplementary teaching and support materials will be uploaded to the course's Moodle platform.
The course will explore generative AI systems in depth, aiming to foster the critical use of these tools for the analysis of literary texts.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral in Italian or Spanish and consists of an interview designed to assess the depth and breadth of knowledge acquired, analytical and argumentative skills, and command of language. The topics assessed cover the entire program. Students may take a partial test (an ongoing assessment lasting two academic hours), which will be used to determine the final grade.

Evaluation criteria

The depth and breadth of knowledge acquired, analytical and argumentative skills, the ability to connect the various topics covered in the course, linguistic propriety, and clarity of exposition will be assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be the result of the partial written test (optional) and the oral exam as a whole and will be expressed out of thirtieths.
