Learning objectives

The main aim of this course is to introduce students to the analysis of the German morphological system. On successful completion of this course students are able to: - describe the basic categories of German morphology; - characterize and explain the main morphological processes of German; - describe the most important differences between the main morphological processes of German and Italian; - apply the acquired knowledge to specific examples of the common language and of the language for specific purposes; - provide evidence that they have acquired advanced language skills corresponding to the fourth level (B2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Prerequisites and basic notions

Students must demonstrate at least B2-level language proficiency in order to take the exam.

Program

The Morphological System of German: An Introduction to Morphological Analysis
This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of morphology, including morph, morpheme, allomorph, affix, and productive morphological process, and examines the structure of morphologically complex words. The following morphological processes are discussed in detail: derivation, inflection, compounding, conversion, Ablaut, Umlaut, and word reduction processes. Particular attention is paid to a comparison between the morphological processes of German and those of Italian. The course also includes practical exercises in morphological analysis.
The language of instruction is German. Students who do not attend classes are required to agree on the examination syllabus with the instructor.
Teaching method: lectures combined with interactive class discussion.

Didactic methods

The course consists of in-person lectures with an interactive teaching approach. It is offered exclusively in person.
Additional teaching materials and supporting resources will be made available on the course's Moodle platform. Students are also encouraged to contact the instructor by email or during office hours if they require further assistance.
Students who need to make up for missed classes should contact the instructor to arrange appropriate support.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination is a written test conducted in German and lasts one hour. It consists of six questions designed to assess students' ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course to the analysis of authentic linguistic data and to provide appropriate theoretical explanations for the linguistic phenomena observed.
Students who do not attend classes are required to agree on the format and content of the written examination with the instructor.
Registration for the examination is subject to the successful completion of a German language proficiency certificate at CEFR level B2 or C1.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Language proficiency is verified through certification issued by the University Language Centre (CLA) or by another accredited language certification provider.
Please note that only students who have fulfilled the prerequisite requirements will be admitted to the examination, namely those who have successfully completed German Language 1 and German Literature 1.
The examination for German Language 2 is assessed according to a predetermined marking scheme, with specific points allocated to each question. Assessment is based on the appropriateness and accuracy of the content as well as on the correct use of the discipline's technical and specialist terminology.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is calculated as the average of the mark obtained in the written examination and the grade corresponding to the student's German language proficiency certificate at CEFR level B2.
Please note that language certificates at a higher proficiency level (e.g. C1) do not result in a more favourable grade conversion.
