Learning objectives

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - describe the basic concepts of grammar; - apply their theoretical knowledge to concrete linguistic data, i.e., analyze German sentences with respect to the so-called "Felderanalyse", the syntactic functions and the other concepts that will be introduced during classes; - appraise the importance of the theoretic framework for the analysis and interpretation of data; - demonstrate to have the German language skills that correspond to the B1 level of the CEFR.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Students must have a basic understanding of logical analysis (syntactic functions) and grammatical analysis (word classes/parts of speech).
The "saperi minimi" (A2 level) must be fulfilled as soon as possible and, in any case, by the end of the first year of the degree program. A support tutoring service will be available in October and November 2026.

Program

"German Sentence Structure: Introduction to Syntactic Analysis"
This course introduces students to the syntactic analysis of the German language (constituent analysis; classification of lexical and syntagmatic categories; syntactic functions and grammatical relations) from the perspective of the so-called "Felderanalyse" a characteristic of the German grammatical tradition.
Non-attending students will consult with the teacher regarding additional reading.

Didactic methods

Lectures (for a total of 30 hours) and practical sessions (for a total of 12 hours) in the classroom.
Lectures supported by PowerPoint presentations.
Exercises using authentic materials from the Fachsprache (specialized language), with discussion and correction in class. Exercises to prepare for the written exam.
The course will be taught in Italian.
Teaching support: Supplementary teaching materials and support will be uploaded to the course's Moodle platform. Students are encouraged to contact the instructor via email or during office hours. Students who need to make up missed lessons or are unable to attend should contact the instructor.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is a written test, either in Italian or German, at the student's discretion. The test is divided into two parts: a first theoretical section with open-ended questions and a second section with exercises (field analysis of some simple and complex sentence structures).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Accuracy and completeness of responses; awareness of the use of the proposed analysis tools.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is determined by the average of the grade obtained in the exam and the score obtained in the language proficiency certification.
