Learning objectives

The learning outcomes of the class “Letterature Comparate” L11 LLS lead students to acquire a knowledge of both the comparative methodologies and an overview of the topics related to both theory of literature and comparative literature. Through the application of the comparative tools, the subject of the course is analyzed in relation to the relative conceptual junctions. At the core of the analysis there is the comparison of texts belonging to different literary traditions, both diachronically and synchronously. At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired adequate knowledge and skills in the fields of comparative literature and literary theoy (knowledge and understanding); of having acquired the ability to learn and understand, and being able to argue and defend a position (learning skills); to be able to convey information, ideas, problems related to the subject imparted (making judgements).

Diversity and inclusion
The course will examine a range of critical approaches to diversity and inclusion in literature and other media, bringing together multiple perspectives and engaging with complementary, divergent, and often conflicting interpretations. Key topics include:
- representations of otherness within and beyond postcolonial frameworks;
- monster theory and critiques of modern culture;
- disability studies and the construction of normality;
- queer studies and transgender identities;
- multilingualism and plurilingualism in literature and society;
- ecocritical perspectives and the more-than-human world;
- empathy and the ethics of inclusive thought.
Artistic works and literary theories will be placed in critical dialogue in order to explore the limits, potential, and challenges of inclusive approaches to art and reality. The course will also adopt an intermedial perspective, comparing literature, the graphic novel, cinema, and music.

Bibliography

Didactic methods

The teaching methods involve face-to-face lectures, to be held on three days per week for a total load of 54 hours (9 CFUs). All materials will be shared on the Moodle platform (and will be part of the exam syllabus). During class, students will be encouraged to participate actively through in-class discussions and group work. Non-attending students will have to compensate for not participating in these activities through study of the critical bibliography. Attending students who find themselves in the position of having to make up for missed lessons must contact the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

For attending students, the exam will be divided into two parts. The first part will consist of an assessment of in-class interaction. The second part will consist of an interview on the course topics. For non-attending students, the exam will consist entirely of an interview on the course topics.

Evaluation criteria

During the in-class activities and at the final oral exam, students will have to show that they have gained critical skills during the course, by means of analytical and argumentative ability to link the various theoretical and methodological frameworks in the interpretation of literary texts. Students must also speak with appropriate language. The assessment will be expressed as a mark out of thirty.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Attending students: in-class activity evaluation (15 points) + final interview evaluation (15 points + laude)
Non-attending students: final interview evaluation (30 points + laude)
