Learning objectives

On completion of this course, students: – will know the geographical and demolinguistic status of Spanish and the essential aspects of the spread of this language in the world and in society; – will know the main grammatical and lexicographical works of the Spanish language and their fundamental characteristics; – will know the essential aspects of the phoneme / grapheme relationship, of the vocabulary and of the morphosyntactic structures of Spanish and will be able to apply them in the analysis of texts. Furthermore, B1 language level of competence in Spanish (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is also required.

Prerequisites and basic notions

To take the exam, a B1 (complete) level of language proficiency is required, corresponding to 3 of the 9 credits for the course. Verification of this proficiency is based on certifications from the University Language Center (CLA) or the DELE from the Instituto Cervantes, subject to prior CLA equivalence uploaded to the platform. CLA B1 language certifications obtained after October 1, 2024, are valid for two years from the date of graduation.

The "saperi minimi" (A2 level) must be fulfilled as soon as possible and, in any case, by the end of the first year of the degree program. A support tutoring service will be available in October and November 2026.

Program

The course aims to:
a) provide an overview of the spread of the Spanish language and related issues, starting from historical, social, and linguistic considerations;
b) provide an introduction to the main linguistic tools (lexicographical repertoires and grammars);
c) provide the basic tools for analysing the main mechanisms underlying the functioning of contemporary Spanish, including a contrastive approach (Italian/Spanish).

The program is the same for both attending and non-attending students.

Didactic methods

Classroom lectures on the program topics.
Teaching materials, which will be an integral part of the exam syllabus, will be used during the lessons. They will be made available on the program's e-learning platform.

Teaching support methods: Supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the program's e-learning platform. A specific tutoring service will be available for the Spanish Language 1 course, with the methods explained in class and on the program's e-learning platform. The instructor will also be available during her office hours. Finally, specific support and tutoring activities for inclusion and accessibility are available, particularly for the French, English, Russian, Spanish, and German Language and Literature courses. These activities will be advertised on the Department's website.

Incoming Erasmus students must have sufficient Italian language skills to understand the lessons (B1 or higher).

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam, duration 60 minutes.
The written exam consists of multiple-choice, short-answer, and open-ended questions. Some questions require metalinguistic reflection and the ability to identify phenomena covered during the course and provide examples of these.
Topics assessed: (a) For students who attend classes regularly (at least 80%), the exam will focus on the bibliography for attending students, the syllabus covered during the classes, and the teaching materials (e-learning platform). (b) For those who do not attend classes, the exam will focus on the bibliography for non-attending students and any teaching materials for non-attending students (e-learning platform).
The exam questions will be formulated in Spanish, but since this is a first-year exam, students may answer the open-ended questions in Italian. The use of support tools will not be permitted (except those agreed upon in specific cases of inclusion and accessibility).
Incoming Erasmus students should contact the instructor at the start of class. A list of additional readings for 3 credits (only for Erasmus students from Spain) will be listed in the Bibliography (Leganto) section, accessible from this page.
The exam, following the syllabus and methods indicated, can be taken no later than the special exam session in January/February 2028.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exam is designed to assess the breadth and depth of knowledge acquired on the topics covered in the syllabus, as well as the relevance of the answers provided, the correct use of language, the precision of terminology, and the ability to systematically connect the acquired knowledge.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade, out of 30, will be calculated by averaging the written exam score (if equal to or higher than 18/30) and the linguistic proficiency score (converted to 30 based on the guidelines in the "Regulatory Handbook for Students of the Foreign Languages and Literatures Area"). A score below 18, the passing threshold, will be considered generally insufficient without further specification.
The final result will be communicated via ESSE3.
