Learning objectives

The main objective of the course (within the Degree in Foreign Language and Lit-eratures) is the acquisition of advanced skills in the field of Spanish literature from 18th to 21st Centuries. The expected learning outcomes are as follows: - Knowledge and understanding: a depth knowledge of the Spanish literature of the considered period: historical context, texts, genres, movements and authors taught in the course, with particular regard to the issues of cultural exchange and the expressive differentiation of literary phenomena. - Applied knowledge and understanding skills: the student will acquire the meth-odologies necessary to work on literary texts in historical and comparative per-spectives and the ability to understand complex texts and implicit meanings.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites are required. However, even partial knowledge of Spanish is considered helpful.

Program

The course will provide a foundation for understanding the major movements, authors, and genres of Spanish literature between the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing in particular on the manifestations of violence, conflict, and oppression in diverse historical and social contexts and distinct literary forms (novel, short story, poetry, drama). Alongside the presentation of the historical and cultural context (the First Republic, the Crisis of '98, Primo de Rivera's dictatorship, the Second Republic, and Franco's dictatorship) and the major literary movements (Realism, Modernism, the Avant-garde, and the Generation of '27), the course will also explore key texts from the period. The program is divided into five parts: - Part I: Realism and Naturalism in the Work of Emilia Pardo Bazán (a selection of short stories). - Part II: The Condition of Women in the Works of Carmen de Burgos and Ángeles Vicente (a novel of the student's choice) - Part III: The Modernist Poetry of Antonio Machado (anthological selection) - Part IV: Paths of Eroticism and Violence in the Poetry and Drama of Federico García Lorca (a play of the student's choice) - Part V: The Postwar Novel: Tremendismo and Camilo José Cela. The study of the texts will be accompanied by partial screenings of films. A detailed summary of the topics covered, along with the complete schedule of teaching activities, will be provided at the beginning of the course. The literature history textbooks and the scheduled texts will be indicated by the instructor and are available in the University Libraries.

Didactic methods

Attending students: The course will consist of lectures with active student participation. Classes will be held in Italian. Course materials will be uploaded to the course's Moodle platform with a sequential number corresponding to the course module. Non-attending students: This program is also valid for non-attending students, who, however, are asked to contact the instructor during office hours. Individual office hours are available throughout the academic year, managed by the instructor, during the hours listed on the website (with a specific appointment required) and regularly updated. Students who need to make up missed lessons may contact the instructor. Teaching support methods: Supplementary teaching and support materials will be uploaded to the course's Moodle platform.
During the course, an in-depth study of generative AI systems is proposed which aims to encourage the critical use of these tools for the analysis of literary texts.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral and conducted in Italian. It consists of an interview designed to assess the depth and breadth of knowledge acquired, analytical and argumentative skills, and command of language. The topics assessed cover the entire program. Students may also take a partial test (an ongoing assessment lasting two academic hours), which will be included in the final grade.

Evaluation criteria

The depth and breadth of knowledge acquired, analytical and argumentative skills, the ability to connect the various topics covered in the course, linguistic propriety, and clarity of exposition will be assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be the result of the partial written test (optional) and the oral exam as a whole and will be expressed out of thirtieths.
