Learning objectives

The course aims at providing in-depth knowledge on the history of the language and literary civilisation of the Slavic peoples in order to facilitate the learning of various Slavic languages and literatures. By the end of the course, students will: 1) know the salient aspects of linguistic and cultural developments from Old Church Slavonic into modern languages and the history of Slavic Studies; 2) know how to apply specific knowledge from the philological and linguistic fields; 3) develop independent judgments on the main topics of the course and express them in a coherent and correct way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of writing standard and morphology of the Russian language (level C1).

Program

The programme will include the following themes:
1. Classification of Slavic languages
2. Elements of Russian culture
3. Historical survey
4. Diglossia and the issue of the Russian literary language
4. Methodology for textual criticism
5. Practice of textual criticism

Erasmus students and non-attending students are required to contact the teacher in order to receive instructions as regards the reference books.

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons; e-learning; analytic reading and discussion of texts (which will be uploaded on the moodle webpage); seminars.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test. Open questions will cover concepts and topics analyzed during the classes, including the necessary vocabulary for the meta-linguistic discourse. Students will be also asked to analyze the texts proposed during the classes.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

- content accuracy and completeness in terms of contents
- adequate analysis abilities
- clarity in the exposition, argumentative ability
- mastery of the subject-specific vocabulary.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is out of 30.
It will consist of the average between open questions and textual analysis.
