Learning objectives

In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. The course aims at presenting an in-depth critical analysis of a given theme throughout French literature. Moreover, students will be provided with the theoretical and methodological tools for the literary and linguistic analysis of the texts taken into consideration. The lessons will be held in French, with the purpose of improving the students’ linguistic level as well. At the end of the course, students shall therefore acquire overall knowledge of the history of French literature, along with critical competences and the capacity of developing in-depth and comparative analysis of the texts the course deals with. Moreover, they will be expected to be able to present the topics of the course in French.

Program

MODULE PROF. GENETTI:
Historical and theoretical-methodological introduction to intertextuality and myth criticism in the French context. All the texts useful for following the lessons will be uploaded to the Moodle platform. From reprise to variation and rewriting to transfiguration, intertextuality is a driving force in the development of literature. As an introduction to the course, a theoretical presentation of the notion of intertextuality in the context of the history of French criticism and the analysis of the rewritings of myths will precede readings of extracts aimed at illustrating and problematizing intertextual dynamics within literary studies. All the texts in question will be uploaded to the Moodle platform.
MODULE PROF.SSA GORRIS:
The course is part of the theoretical, critical and methodological in-depth study of French literature planned for the two-year Master's degree. It therefore aims to develop theoretical-critical skills from both a historical and methodological perspective. Borrowing from the French Literature course for publishing, instead, an in-depth study of the history of French publishing and the relationship between literature and literary criticism is planned, with particular attention to Renaissance literature and the development of typographic techniques (laboratories will be set up for this in-depth study). At the end of the course, structured in lectures and seminar activities, all in French, students will have to demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge in the field of the history of French criticism and related methodologies (LM37) and the history of French publishing (LM19), as well as the ability to apply this knowledge, autonomously and with mastery of the French language, to the analysis of literary works in research and teaching contexts. This teaching of French Literature contributes to the theoretical, critical and methodological deepening provided for in the two years of the Master's. This course therefore aims to develop theoretical and critical skills by combining a historical perspective and a methodological approach. For students in History of the book, an in-depth study is planned regarding the history of French publishing and the relationship between literature and the history of publishing and literary criticism (seminars and laboratories will be organized with the participation of historians of the book and the world of publishing). At the end of this course students will have acquired knowledge in the fields of the history of French criticism and the main methods of literary analysis (LM37) and the history of French publishing (LM19), as well as the ability to apply this knowledge, independently and in French, to the study of works in the contexts of research and teaching.

Learning assessment procedures

Assessment will be through an oral assessment of knowledge relating to the course; elements of the history and methodologies of literary criticism (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19).

Evaluation criteria

The following will be assessed: the quality of oral expression in French, the clarity and coherence of the argument, the completeness of the information, and the ability to critically explore the knowledge acquired.
