Learning objectives

In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. As for the students attending the course in French literature for publishing and journalism, this course offers insights on the history of French publishing and on the relationship between literature or literary criticism and jouralism. At the end of this course, students shall acquire knowledge in the field of the recent history of French literary criticism and related methods (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19), along with the capacity of applying such knowledge to literary research as well as to teaching French.

Prerequisites and basic notions

To be eligible for the exam, one must have passed the French language and literature exams in the first year of this Master’s degree.

Program

Part 1
The first part of the course will explore André Gide’s "Saül". Written in 1898, "Saül" is Gide’s first dramatic work. We will focus in particular on his use of biblical sources and on its rewriting, which is the most developed and ambitious in all of Gide’s theatrical productions.
Part 2
The second part of the course will focus on Michel de Montaigne’s essay “Apologie de Raimond Sebond” as an iconic text of the crisis of humanist anthropocentrism at the end of the sixteenth century. Particular attention will be paid to the theme of “doubt”, by which the author challenges the supremacy of human reason and the hierarchy of the scala naturæ.
Part 3
In the third part of the course, we will examine Phèdre as an iconic masterpiece of classical drama and Racinean tragedy. We will focus in particular on the manifold ideological and poetic implications of the motif—common at the time—of confessed guilty passion.

Didactic methods

Lectures. Attendance is strongly recommended. Students who are unable to attend are asked to contact the lecturers.

Learning assessment procedures

A short oral presentation on a topic for each of the three sections. Total duration: about 30 minutes.

Evaluation criteria

The following will be assessed: the breadth and depth of knowledge, the clarity of argumentation and the accuracy of presentation.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The average of the three marks obtained in the three sections.
