Learning objectives

The course is held in German and aims at analysing and comparing literary texts of various genres, from the XVIIIth to the XXth Century, with the most recent instruments of literary criticism, such as semiotics, intertextuality, intermediality, narratology, reception theory and history, cultural studies and translation studies. At the end of the course students will be able to attain deep knowledge both of the historical context and of the different literary works. They will also have to be able to analyse and understand the texts dealt with during the lessons and to properly express their knowledge in German.

In 2022 Sarah Chaney published a study entitled “Am I Normal?” which became a bestseller in popular nonfiction. In her research she traces the history and rise of the concept of “normality” in Western culture and society. In the nineteenth century this concept migrated from mathematics and statistics to the social sciences where it became an element that determined the inclusion or exclusion of individuals or groups in the social whole. The stigma of abnormality affected, for example, disabled people, homosexuals, or people who stood out for particular physical or intellectual characteristics. In her study Sarah Cheney does not disdain to start from questions that many of us have asked ourselves, such as: Do I have a normal body? Is it normal to feel this way? Are my children normal? To exemplify the various conceptualizations of normality, Chaney uses literary texts such as Goethe's Werther or Wedekind's Spring Awakening. Following Chaney's studies, we will deal, in seminar form, with the metamorphoses of "normality" in modern and contemporary German-speaking literature.
