Learning objectives

By reading and analyzing literary texts written in diverse romance languages, the course of Romance Philology allows students to acquire and develop fundamental notions and knowledge in the fields of philology, historical linguistics and literature. It allows them to refine their ability to interpret and comprehend literary texts and to elaborate important elements of historical and cultural critical judgement. At the end of the course students will be able to autonomously confront with different levels of analysis to be applied to examined texts. They will also be able to prove their knowledge of disciplinary lexicon and to properly express the main contents of the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of Latin and previous attendance of a course in philology (Romance, Germanic, Italian, Slavic) or in historical linguistics provide a useful background for the course, but they are not mandatory prerequisites.

Program

The Lyric Poetry of the Troubadours. Through the reading, translation, commentary, and linguistic analysis of a selection of poems by some of the main troubadours (Guilhem IX, Jaufre Rudel, Marcabru, Bernart de Ventadorn, Raimbaut d’Aurenga, Giraut de Bornelh, Arnaut Daniel), the course will illustrate the history, themes, and trajectories of lyric poetry in the Occitan language, with particular emphasis on its connections with other European literary traditions (Italian, French, Catalan, Castilian, German). The aim is to outline a profile that clarifies the meaning, context, intentions, and value of Occitan lyric, which lies at the origins not only of modern lyric poetry but also of an entire amorous imaginary that continues to permeate Western thought.

Didactic methods

36 hours of lectures in total (= 6 ECTS), delivered in a traditional classroom format, supported by projections and the reading of texts.

Learning assessment procedures

Knowledge and skills will be assessed through an oral examination consisting of three to four questions aimed at verifying both knowledge and abilities. The exam will also include the reading and analysis of some of the texts discussed in class.

Evaluation criteria

Preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed on a 30-point scale) if the student demonstrates: knowledge, understanding, and the ability to apply the topics covered; clarity of exposition, with appropriate use of both specialist and general vocabulary and an autonomous organization of arguments; and the ability to define concepts.
The final grade is expressed on a 30-point scale.
The achievement of a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the topics covered, combined with good critical skills, expressive mastery, and command of specialized language, will be assessed with very good to excellent grades (28–30 with honors).
Predominantly mnemonic or not fully matured acquisition of content, along with linguistic and logical skills that are not always adequate, will be assessed with grades ranging from fair (21–24) to good (25–27).
A minimal level of knowledge of the course content, together with gaps in preparation or insufficient linguistic and logical skills, will result in a passing grade (18–20).
The absence of a minimal level of knowledge of the course content, combined with inadequate linguistic and logical skills and significant gaps in preparation, will result in a failing grade (<18/30).
