Learning objectives

Workshop on Philosophy and Cinema
The Workshop of Philosophy and Cinema aims to specifically develop contemporary philosophical research focusing on cinema and related issues. Though it mainly employs philosophical methodologies, it also resorts to use elements and conceptual tools coming from other disciplines, such as psychoanalysis, anthropology, history of culture, and visual studies.
Particular attention will be given to the development of the following skills:
- Understanding the status of art and its political implications;
- Ability to compare peculiar aspects of thought with contemporary themes and / or authors;
- Ability to formulate independent judgments on the genesis, nature and meaning of the issues addressed during the courses.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The Laboratory in Philosophy and Cinema does not require any formal prerequisites. What is expected, however, is a willingness on the part of each student to engage with the fundamental questions of philosophy, to relate them to the basic concepts of cinema and video art introduced during the sessions, and to participate actively in collective discussion.

Program

The workshop aims to explore the relationship between sound and image in cinema. It will explore sound as atmosphere, as a perceptual threshold, as a relational material and a principle of image dislocation, as well as a form of manifestation of what, in experience, exceeds the full visible presence.

Didactic methods

1. Theoretical meetings with discussion;
2. seminar meetings starting from the viewing of film material;
3. group work in the classroom;
4. discussion with the guests of the laboratory.
* Due to its specific format, the laboratory will take place exclusively in person. No recordings will be made or provided.

Learning assessment procedures

There is no exam, but attendance at at least 70% of the activities is mandatory.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The workshop requires recognition of the work completed through a pass. To qualify, a minimum attendance of 70% of the scheduled hours is required. Students who fail to attend regularly must arrange with the instructor to submit a philosophical paper.
