Learning objectives

Roman History The course is aimed at improving the students skill in deeming the quality and the reliability of documents of Roman history by means of comparisons between different authors or between authors and other kinds of sources. Students will improve their communication skill by expressing their opinions or even their doubts concerning problems arising from the course, and receiving answers and directions on how to shape their discourses. Their learning skill will be improved by means of an interaction of studies in historical sources and iconographies. At the end of the course students should demonstrate that they understand the most important topics dealt with in the classes, that they are able to analyse critically both the sources and the iconographies related to the topics and to present their talk in a logical sequence, clearly and on the basis of documents.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of Roman history.

Program

The course will address the history of the Roman Empire, from the birth of the Principate at the time of Augustus to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The theme will be explored mainly through the analysis of primary sources, especially literary, iconographic, epigraphic and numismatic ones. Non-attending students may take the exam by following the instructions posted in the course Moodle page.

Didactic methods

The course will be classroom-taught.

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam will be held orally.

Evaluation criteria

The lecturer will ask three questions on all teaching materials.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be determined according to the following criteria:
- sufficient (18/30-23/30): superficial knowledge of the topics covered; incomplete preparation;
- satisfactory (24/30-27/30): adequate or good ability to orientate oneself and approach the topics of the programme with a critical sense;
- excellent (28/30-31/30): complete understanding of the topics covered and excellent critical thinking skills.
