Learning objectives

1. MOLECULAR CELL BIOLOGY: the course aims to provide knowledge on the structure and function of the eukaryotic cell, interpreted in both morphological and molecular terms.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the morphology and functions of the main cell compartments, structures and organelles;
- illustrate the mechanisms of genetic information transmission and expression;
- illustrate the molecular mechanisms used by autotrophic and heterotrophic eukaryotic cells to obtain energy and material from the environment, through the processes of photosynthesis and respiration;
- use an appropriate scientific language.

Examination methods: the examination will be an oral test aimed to verify
-the overall degree of knowledge of the subject of this course;
-the scientific language skills.

2. FOOD BOTANY: the purpose of the course is to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of plants used in human nutrition, with a special focus on the production and accumulation of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, fibers) and specialized bioactive metabolites in the organs and plant cells.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
-itemize the biosynthesis and / or storage compartments containing the reserve molecules (proteins, sugars, lipids) and fibers in the plant cell, as well as specialized metabolites, describing the morphology and biogenesis of these compartments;
-Distinguish the different organs of the plant (root, shoot, stem, lateral organs, reserve organs, reproductive organs) and describe their macroscopic organization and function;
-Identify the edible organs of plants, describing their botanical features and the characteristics of nutritional interest;
- illustrate the main classes of specialized metabolites of edible plants and their characteristics and properties when taken with food;
- list the main groups of terrestrial plants and describe the most important botanical families for human nutrition;
-to acquire an appropriate scientific language for the subject under consideration.

Examination methods: the examination will be an oral test aimed to verify
-the overall degree of knowledge of the subject of this course;
-the scientific language skills.
