Learning objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge of different aspects of human and medical genetics. They include the different patterns of inheritance, characterization of different types of DNA alterations and their functional impact, genetic variability in populations, and strategies to identify genetic factors involved in genetic diseases. During the course, the student is expected to develop the following skills: (i) acquire good knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate the transmission of traits, experimental approaches aimed at defining the genetic causes of diseases; (ii) be able to apply a scientific method based on the interpretation of data and the application of the correct tools acquired for the analysis and solution of specific problems; (iii) show critical ability and autonomy of judgment, demonstrating the ability to connect the different aspects of the discipline in a concise manner and with mastery of language; (iv) be able to independently investigate the topics covered in the course through critical consultation of scientific articles provided by the instructor.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Students should have acquired the essential concepts of biology, chemistry and biochemistry

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The genetics exam consists of a single written test for both the medical genetics and molecular genetics modules. It includes multiple choice quizzes, open questions and exercises to be completed in 60 minutes. The genetics exam is passed if the grade is equal to or greater than 18/30.
