Learning objectives

The general goal of the course is to develop the knowledge of physiology and psychology, acquired in the three modules into which the course is divided, in view of subsequent studies in the physiopathological and clinical fields. Therefore, the student, at the end of the course, will have to know the physiological functions of the different systems and organs of the human body from both a biological and psychological point of view.
Module of Physiology I
The objectives of the module are: understanding the physical-chemical and molecular mechanisms underlying resting membrane polarization, action potential, synaptic communication and stimulus transduction; knowledge of the structure and molecular processes that allow contraction in skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle; knowledge of the organization and function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, their regulatory mechanisms and their coordination in the execution of specific tasks such as internal medium homeostasis, regulation of cardiac output, blood pressure, pulmonary ventilation and acid-base balance.
Module of Physiology II
The objectives of the module are: knowledge of the role of the kidney in regulating hydro-saline and acid-base balance of the body; knowledge of basal metabolism and activity metabolism with the body's caloric and qualitative intake needs, and the related nervous and hormonal regulation mechanisms; knowledge of the physiology of the alimentary canal, with specific reference to motility, secretion, digestion and absorption; knowledge of the endocrine glands and their coordination by the hypothalamic-pituitary system; knowledge of the structures and mechanisms of the sense and motor organs and their brain centers; knowledge of the structures and mechanisms of sleep-wake cycle regulation; knowledge of the neurophysiological bases of higher brain functions and the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuronal plasticity.
Module of General Psychology
The objectives of the module are: knowledge of cognitive functions and related neuropsychological syndromes: perception/agnosia, attention/neglect, learning-memory/amnesia, language/aphasia, emotions-motivation/Kluver-Bucy, executive functions/frontal syndrome.

Prerequisites and basic notions

In order to understand the course of Physiology, you must have first assimilated the basic notions of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Anatomy and Biochemistry, in particular:
• Chemistry: the concept of pH, diffusion, molarity, osmolarity and pressure osmotic;
• Physics: electro-physics, physics of gases, surface tension, Laplace's law, basic notions of mechanics, statics and dynamics of fluids;
• Biology: biophysical characteristics of the cell membrane, structure of the cell and cell organelles, the genetic code with transcription and translation, protein synthesis, membrane receptors, intracellular signals and second messengers;
• Anatomy: le basic anatomical characteristics of the main systems of the human body, such as the nervous, cardio-respiratory and renal systems;
• Biochemistry: the main metabolic pathways, enzymatic kinetics and mitochondrial enzymes, and oxidative phosphorylation.

The final grade out of thirty is given by the weighted average according to the CFU of the 3 modules.
