Program

FIRST CONCEPTUAL BLOCK: STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER: Substances and chemical formulas. The atom. The mole. Electronic structure and periodic properties of atoms: orbitals; electronic configurations of the elements; the periodic table. The chemical bond: Lewis theory of the covalent bond; notes on the theories of the valence bond and molecular orbitals; hybridization and resonance; the ionic bond, the metallic bond. Weak bonds. SECOND CONCEPTUAL BLOCK: CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES, THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS AND REACTIVITY: Notes on thermodynamics and thermochemistry. Solutions. Chemical equilibrium. Equilibria in solution. Electrochemistry (galvanic and electrolytic cells, use of electrochemical series). THIRD CONCEPTUAL BLOCK: CHEMICAL REACTIVITY: Chemical reactions. Types of reactions. Stoichiometry. FOURTH CONCEPTUAL BLOCK: CHEMICAL KINETICS AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY: Kinetic equations, concepts of activation energy, molecularity, steric factor. Integrated laws of the reaction rate. Relationship between kinetic constant and equilibrium constant. Introduction to catalysis. Catalysts, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Langmuir isotherm, active sites. Introduction to organic chemistry: aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, structure and nomenclature. Properties and reactivity of hydrocarbons. Substitution, addition and elimination reactions. Cyclic hydrocarbons. Aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene and its derivatives. Electrophilic substitution reactions of benzene Polar organic compounds. Concept of polarity and its influence on properties. Halogen alkanes, alcohols. Alcohols as fuels. Ethers, amines. Structure, properties and reactivity. Carbonyl compounds. Aldehydes and ketones. Carboxylic acids, esters and amides. Structure, properties and reactivity. Palm oil problem. Biodiesel. Molecules of biological interest (amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and their characteristic reactions).

Didactic methods

The course will be delivered in person and in streaming mode for out-of-town students (Verona). For students with justified needs (for example working students) who request it, recordings of the lessons will be made available.

Learning assessment procedures

At the end of the course, a written test is scheduled as an exam, lasting an hour and a half, consisting of 17 questions related to inorganic chemistry and 7 questions related to organic chemistry and chemical kinetics. For the part related to inorganic chemistry, 14 exercises focus on theory while 3 exercises concern: a) ponderal stoichiometry; b) concentration of solutions and c) acid-base equilibria or precipitation. For the part on organic chemistry and kinetics, of the 7 exercises, 1 is more "elaborate". All questions are multiple choice (5 options) of which only one is correct. Although students have the same questions, each of them will have a personalized order, both of the questions and of the relative answers. During the written test, the use of the calculator and the consultation of the periodic table and the potential table are permitted (if necessary and in any case provided by the teacher).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation will be based on the verification of the concepts received, through the written test and described in the "Exam Method" field. The student who has obtained a sufficient grade in only one of the two parts (inorganic or organic) can keep this grade valid for one year. In this period of time, he/she will be able to take the exam only for the part in which he/she has not yet obtained a sufficient result.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

In case of correct answer by the student, the 14 theoretical inorganic chemistry exercises and the 6 organic and kinetic chemistry exercises receive 1 point. Instead, the 3 inorganic chemistry exercises and the organic or kinetic chemistry exercise receive 2.5 points. No points are deducted in case of incorrect or missing answers.
