Learning objectives

The evolution of web-based technologies has led to what we know today as Web 2.0: structured or semantically enriched data sources usable through applications that interact mainly via web browsers. Developing such applications in a rational, updated and secure way is a challenge because it requires a broad conceptual background (network protocols, database, multi-thread programming, etc.) and an updated knowledge of emerging and most promising technologies. The course aims to systematically introduce all the fundamental concepts for the development of dynamic web applications with an analysis of their potential and critical issues through the development of real applications. In this way, the student not only acquires the ability to develop dynamic web applications but also develops a critical analysis ability on the most appropriate technologies to use.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge typically acquired in a Bachelor’s degree programme in Computer Science, with particular reference to programming, databases, computer networks, and principles of cybersecurity.

Program

The course presents the conceptual and architectural principles for designing modern dynamic web applications.
1. Evolution of the Web and Application Architectures
2. Protocols, Standards, and Execution Model
3. Conceptual Front-End
4. Back-End and Application Logic
5. APIs and Client-Server Communication
6. Persistence and Data for Dynamic Web Applications
7. State, Identity, and Security
8. Scalability, Reliability, and Operational Quality
9. LLM-Based Frameworks and Architectures
10. Emerging Technologies and Critical Analysis

Didactic methods

In presence lessons.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam based on the presentation and critical discussion of a final project, in which students will design a dynamic web application, justifying the architectural, technological, and security choices made.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The assessment will consider the student’s knowledge and mastery of the concepts covered in class, their ability to apply them to real-world contexts, and their ability to explain, justify, and critically discuss the design and implementation choices adopted.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be determined 50% by the quality of the project and 50% by the student’s ability to present, justify, and critically discuss, during the oral examination, the design and implementation choices adopted.
