BIO/11 - MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Period

II semestre dal Mar 1, 2027 al Jun 11, 2027.

Courses Single

Authorized with reserve

Learning objectives

The aim of this course is to give the students the basic knowledge on most used nanocompounds and on molecular, cellular and systemic mechanisms concerning their interaction with the living organisms. The student must learn the key concepts that regulate the interaction between nanocompounds and living cells. At the end of the course the students will have acquired the basics to understand the biologic mechanisms of interaction between nanomaterials and the environment in terms of interaction and accumulation.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prior knowledge is required.
A knowledge of Basic Biology and Molecular Biology is suggested.

Program

- Introduction
- Nanocompounds classification (Natural Nanoparticles and Engineered Nanoparticles)
- General properties of Nanocompounds
- Potential Environmental Effects (Positive and negative effects)
- Nanocompounds-Living organisms interaction
- Environmental Influence of Toxicology of Nanomaterials
- Nanotoxicology - toxicology of nanoparticles
- Physico-chemical characteristics dependent toxicity
- Human Health Effect of Nanomaterials and Environment Risk Assessment
- Detection and Characterization of Nanomaterials in Complex Biologic and Environmental Samples

Didactic methods

The teacher will use frontal lessons and he will stimulate the interaction with students. Didactic material useful to the course will be uploaded on the Moodle page of the course in pdf format.
Students unable "pro tempore" to attend classroom lessons will be able to download the pdf files related to the various topics from the Moodle page of the course.
The possibility of following the lessons in streaming will be granted only to those students with severe disabilities and absolutely unable to attend the classroom, through prior agreement with the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination.
The final exam will be on two questions concerning any of the topics treated during the course and it is passed if both answers are positive.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The ability to discursively organize knowledge, the ability to reason critically on the study carried out, the quality of the exposition and the competence in the use of specialist vocabulary will be assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The grade will consist of the average of the evaluation on the various evaluation components.
