Learning objectives
The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive training on both structure and role of microbial communities within different natural and anthropized habitats, as main actors of biogeochemical cycles of the elements. Students will have the opportunity to learn the most up-to-date theoretical principles and experimental methodologies to analyze microbial communities both in natural systems and in engineered (technological) contexts. Students attending the course will also be able to acquire interpretative tools allowing them to identify the occurrence of ecological imbalances and critically evaluate human impacts on the environment in terms of pollution and climate change, possibly even due to perturbations of microbial biocenoses at macro-scale level.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of the biology of microorganisms: microbial metabolism (e.g. fermentation, respiration, etc.), organization and components of the microbial cell, both eukaryotic and prokaryotic, environmental parameters that influence their growth (oxygen, pH, temperature)

Microbial ecosystems 5. Microbial growth 6. Analysis of communities by culture-dependent methods 7. Microbial phylogeny and systematics 8. Analysis of microbial communities by cultivation-independent microscopy methods 9. Analysis of communities by culture-independent methods 10. Measurement of microbial activities in natural habitats 11. Adaptation mechanisms 12. Applicability of microbial bioresources
Didactic methods
The lessons will be held in Italian in person; the teaching material will be available in Italian. Teaching will be carried out without resorting to emergency online teaching methods. It will not be delivered in other ways except for students who cannot access the University due to Covid.
Learning assessment procedures
Written exam combining open-ended questions and multiple-choice quizzes. The exam will last 90 minutes and will be divided into two parts: 10 multiple-choice quizzes and 3 open-ended questions.
Evaluation criteria
In quizzes, the evaluation will be objective and there will be no penalty for incorrect answers; in open questions, the scientific content of the answer, the completeness (presence of all the elements required by the question) and the clarity of the exposition will be taken into consideration.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade is composed of: 10 multiple choice quiz questions (10 points) and 3 open questions (20 points). During the course, a journal club will be held (not mandatory), during which students will present a scientific paper that will allow them to obtain up to 2 points on the final grade.
