Learning objectives

The industrial-scale implementation of bio-products or biorefinery processes requires a thorough evaluation of their economic potential, as well as their environmental and energy impacts. The course aims to provide foundational knowledge for the application of two fundamental tools: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC), which are respectively focused on the environmental and economic analysis of products, services, and processes. The LCA analysis focuses on quantifying the environmental impact of a product throughout all stages of its life cycle, from raw material extraction to production, transportation, use, and final disposal. The LCC method, on the other hand, allows for the calculation of the overall cost of a product or service throughout its life cycle, with the goal of optimizing production costs or maximizing revenues. The course will also delve into the application of mass and energy balances, essential tools for evaluating and improving the efficiency of the processes being analyzed.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The course requires knowledge of basic notions of mathematics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics.

Program

The course is divided into three main thematic areas: 1) the mass and energy balance to be performed on both individual processes and the entire production scheme for biofuels and bio-based products; 2) the basic environmental impact assessment (Life Cycle Assessment) of the main biotechnologies used in the biorefinery field; 3) the basic economic feasibility assessment of the processes, necessary for evaluating their potential scale-up. Didactic methods

The course alternates lectures with small-group exercises. Lectures will cover the main theoretical concepts of the topics covered in the program. During the exercises, students will be able to set up and solve, with the instructor's guidance, mass balance exercises and environmental impact and cost assessments of bioprocesses.

Learning assessment procedures

The candidate is required to pass a written exam which will have as its object the resolution of a matter and energy balancing exercise and a basic assessment of the environmental and cost impacts of a bio-process. Furthermore, the written exam will include the answer to 15 multiple choice questions.

Evaluation criteria

The exam will evaluate the ability to set up simple mass and energy balances as well as to evaluate the main environmental impacts and costs / revenues of the proposed bio-process.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The exam grade will depend 70% on the mass and energy balance and the assessment of the environmental impacts and costs/revenues of the process being examined, and 30% on the answers to the multiple-choice questions.
