Learning objectives
The class considers the theoretical concepts of this discipline and its methods of empirical research. The course has the aim to give to the students the tools they need to understand and use the methodology of the sociological research applied to law.

Program
The class offers a general introduction to the legal phenomenon as social phenomenon, showing at the same time the impossibility to reduce law to power. For this reason the course will analyze come fundamental problems coming from philosophy, history, politics, literature and cinema.
In the special part the attention will be focused on Law & Economics literature, trying to highlight features, potentialities and limits of this research project, oriented to interpret law with the tools of economic analysis.

Didactic methods
The first part of the course will present Febbrajo's introductory text to the sociology of law, also developing an in-depth study on the legal profession in some Western countries.
In the second part the study on some classical texts (Coase, Calabresi, Manne, etc.) will be accompanied by the analysis of some concrete cases.
Learning assessment procedures
The final exam will be oral. The candidate must show that he has carefully read and studied all the texts: those illustrated in class and those left for personal study.
During the exam (about 15 minutes) the student must show:
- understanding and knowledge;
- ability to make judgements;
- communicative qualities;
- study method.
Evaluation criteria
In evaluating the student, his knowledge of the texts (which must be read and studied in all their parts) and his ability to reflect on the law starting from those theoretical perspectives will be taken into consideration.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The vote will be expressed out of thirty and it will reflect the knowledge on the general part (introducing the sociology of law) and on the special part (about Law and Economics).
