Program

Educational Objectives.
The course is intended as a starting point for approaching the study of contemporary history.
It focuses on the political, intellectual and social history of Europe between 1815 and 1911, which is approached, starting from the Italian case, from a comparative and transnational perspective.
At the end of the course the student should be able to know:
(a) methods and tools used in the study of contemporary history.
(b) the periodizations, interpretations and vocabulary used by international historiography.
(c) the most relevant events of the period considered with reference both to the general European and non-European framework and to the different national contexts.
(d) the most important political cultures, economic processes and social transformations marking the period indicated.
Course opening lecture (October 4, 2022, h. 11.50 aula H):
Presentation of the course program, explanation of the assigned bibliography and examination methods.

The nineteenth century and the birth of the modern world
Lecture topics:
1. The dawn of the new era: economy, society, and politics between the 1700s and 1800s.
2. The American Revolution and the French Revolution.
3. A new global economy: the Industrial Revolution.
4. The Restoration and The New European Order.
5. Revolutions return: The uprisings of 1820-25 and 1830-31.
6. 1848-49: a European revolution.
7. Europe of the bourgeoisie: factories, transportation, cities and countryside.
8. The Italian Risorgimento: premises and developments.
9. The Italian unification process.
10. German unification.
11. European political systems and the "transformation" of politics.
12. The "first" globalization and the second industrial revolution.
13. The strategies of the great European powers.
14. Characters and structures of liberal Italy.
15. The United States: a new world power.
16. Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
17. Imperialism and revolutions.
18. Giolittian Italy.

The course is in-person with lecture recording.
It provides for alternating between lectures and viewing of audiovisual materials.

Learning assessment procedures

Examination procedure
1. Assessment methods: structured written exam in open and closed questions.
2. Objectives: to verify the ability to disply concepts using appropriate historical terminoloy, the ability to link events and to place them adequately within the individual national contexts, the knowledge of the different historiographical interpretations of the most relevant historical processes.
3. Contents: the questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and developed in the volumes indicated in the bibliography.

Evaluation criteria

Assessment methods: score expressed in thirtieths, resulting from the sum of the points assigned to each of the questions.
The regulation of the degree program requires compliance with the propaedeutics of the modules: it is therefore not possible to prepare the module P without having passed the module I.
Students are not advised to deal with the form I and the P form in the same appeal.
Other informations
1. This course is preparatory to taking Contemporary History (P), which will take place in the second semester.
2. Required prerequisites are: basic knowledge of historical events between the mid-18th century and the early 20th century.
3. This syllabus is valid until the February 2024 roll call.
4. Students-Erasmus (and students hosted with other international mobility programs) attending classes may choose from the following options:
a. Written exam (also in English).
b. Oral exam (in English, French).
They can, in addition, use other textbooks, agreed with the lecturer, in the following languages: English, French, Spanish.
