Learning outcomes

Prof. Chiara Concina
The course has in aim to give an overview on the first medieval vernacular romances.
A series of selected passages from the 'Roman de Brut' and the 'Roman d'Eneas' will be read, translated, and analyzed during the class.

Prof. Fabio Sangiovanni
The course has in aim to give an overview of the romances of Chrétien de Troyes, with particular attention for the 'Cligès' (1175 ca.).

The course will be divided into three parts:
1. The origins of vernacular medieval romance and the first texts.
2. The Roman de Brut by Wace (passages of this work will be read, translated and commented during this part of the course).
3. The Roman d'Eneas (passages of this work will be read, translated and commented during this part of the course).

Examination Methods

Final oral examination.
The oral examination aims at evaluating the student's knowledge, with special reference to the texts read during the lectures; general knowledge of the companions in use will be checked, as well.

Erasmus students will be informed during the lectures about the oral examination.
