Learning outcomes

LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course has three learning outcomes: 1)to provide a basic knowledge of the historical grammar of the Italian language; 2)to provide a basic knowledge of the history of the Italian language, from its origins to modernity; 3)to guide students in the morphosyntactic analysis of some significant texts in a diachronic perspective. KNOWLEDGE: •elements of phonetics, morphology and historical grammar; •birth and development of the Italian language from its origins to the contemporary. SKILLS: •Recognize the traits of continuity and discontinuity between the Latin and Italian languages; •Interpreting texts in Italian language in a diachronic perspective.

Program

1) Historical grammar of Italian language
a. from Latin to vulgar: elements of phonetics
b. elements of nominal and verbal morphology
2) History of Italian language, from the oldest vernacular documents to the contemporary Italian language, with particular regard to the most significant historical moments:
a. the birth of the literary language in the Fourteenth Century
b. the codification of the literary language in the Sixteenth Century
c. the first Vocabulary of the Italian language (Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca, 1612)
d. the linguistic debate in the Eighteenth Century
e. the linguistic debate in the Nineteenth Century and the national union
f. the making of the national language

TEACHING METHOD:
The course will be in presence and live streaming on Zoom, for the students who cannot access the classroom; the Zoom link is present in the platform Moodle. In compliance with the University of Verona guidelines, the lesson will be videotaped and will remain on the platform Moodle for 30 days.

Examination Methods

The exam is an oral exam and is intended to ascertain the knowledge related to the topics covered during the course and the ability to interpret the language of the texts in a diachronic perspective.
The students who follow only the video recordings will be considered non-attending students and must also submit the program supplement indicated in the bibliography.
