The teaching is organized as follows:

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide an exhaustive outline of the Italian literary tradition and its main formal and thematic features from the beginning to the Italian Unity.

Program

The course is devoted to the father's figure in Italian literature and is divided into two parts, the first held by prof. Massimo Natale, the second by prof. Fabio Forner and Giuseppe Chiecchi. The program of prof. Chiecchi is included in that of prof. Forner.

First part of the course (Prof. Natale)
How was the father imagined by literature? How was he portrayed? Which are the main differences between the representation of the father in literature, in psycoanalisis or in anthropology? This part of the course will focus on the figure of the father in Italian literature and culture from the French Revolution to the twentieth century. During the course we will read and comment texts from the works of Leopardi, Freud, Kafka, Svevo, Lacan, Ortese, Montale, Zanzotto, Magrelli.



Second Part of the Course (Prof. Forner, Prof. Chiecchi)

This part of the course will focus on the figure of the father in Italian literature from the beginning to the eighteenth century. We will read and comment during the lesson texts takne from the works of: Dante, Commedia; Petrarca, De Remediis, De vita solitaria, Canzoniere; Boccaccio, Decameron, Ariosto, Orlando furiouso; Alfieri, Vita scritta da esso and tragedies; Parini, Il Giorno. Additional readings will be selected during the course.

Examination Methods

The exam will be oral and will be divided in to two parts. In the first part, the student should demonstrate the knowledge of the part of the course by Prof. Natale; In the second the one of Professor Forner and Chiecchi. In this second part, the student should be able to comment the passages of the texts presented during the lessons, giving biographical information of the authors and demonstrating a sufficient knowledge of the Italian literary history from the beginning to the nineteenth century. For non-attending students, a special program will be prepared.
The vote is expressed in marks from 18 to 30/30.

ERASMUS students are requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses to agree together the teaching methods and the assessment tests.
