Learning outcomes

The course introduces to classics of modern philosophy with the aim of highlighting a set of systematic problems related to the philosophy of knowledge and to metaphysics.

Program

Prerequisite: To attend the course is recommended frequency in the first half of the course also of the History of Philosophy A (i) (12).

Course content:
Introduction to the problem of the self in modern thought. The topic of the Self (Ego), as set out by the Cartesian methodical doubt and the real distinction between res congitans, on the one hand, and res extensa, on the other hand, remains one of the main points of the current debate. In this context, the empiricist perspective, represented by Hume and criticized by Kant, faces the analysis of experience suggested by Locke and the logical and metaphysical demands of Leibniz's perspective, and those ones of Kant's practical reason.

Recommended reading:
1) it will be provided in an anthology on the problem of the modern thought that will cover the following authors: Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Hume, Kant.

Any indication will be provided to students during the course and will be available online at the e-learning section of the website of the University of Verona, where he will also suggest any further depth texts and teaching materials.
