Introducing to an understanding not necessarily "critical", rather passionate, of "property" and "poverty", by following a few basic principles of mystical thought in the the Middle Ages and contemporary philosophy.
Program
PROPERTY, CONSUME, EBRIETY
The title of a book by Erich Fromm, very popular among teenagers a few generations ago, was: "To Have or to Be?". A very naive question at the end, because in the western philosophical culture “being” is not an alternative to “having”, but is valid the equation to be = to have. “Being” is for us “good Europeans”, as Husserl would say, a function of property. That's why since Aristotle we find it hard to distinguish the "ousia", the "substance" understood as the essence, from the "substance" as money. For the same reason the characteristics of the substance are thought as "attributes". And, from the German mystic thinking to Kant, who is the gateway to contemporary philosophy, the experiential possibilities of the subject are called "Vermoegen", i.e. possessions, means. What is the ultimate meaning of this identity between being and having? Today, first of all, it has the meaning of "merchandise", which is able to fully determine our experience of reality and our being-in-the-world. The places of happiness and real existence are the malls and catalogs via internet, supposed we have the use of a credit or debit card. Through these devices we own the world. Hard to say that this is not the case. A question that can be raised, however, is: things are just like that?
