M-STO/01 - MEDIEVAL HISTORY

Second half of Semester 1  dal Nov 13, 2017 al Jan 20, 2018.

Learning outcomes

Formative goals: a) the knowledge of the history of Europe in the mediaeval Millennium; b) competence in the interpretation and in the analysis of the historical settings in which the students live; c) in the meantime students are directed to improve the methods of historical research guided by the teacher, through the study of the specific case: The monasteries of Mathilda of Canossa/Tuscany. In this topic history, art and civilization are connected with an extraordinary woman as Mathilda of Canossa/Tuscany (1046-1115).

Program

These goals are pursued:

a) With the study of the handbook: P. GOLINELLI, Breve storia dell’Europa medievale, Bologna, Pàtron, 2001, explained during lessons.

b) MONOGRAPHIC COURSE:

The monasteries of Mathilda of Canossa/Tuscany,

to prepare with notes from the lessons, the analysis of the medieval sources introduced to the students during lessons, and the book:

P. GOLINELLI, L’ancella di san Pietro. Matilde di Canossa e la Chiesa, Milano, Jaca Book, 2015.

Those who can’t attend to the lessons are required to read also a book to choose in the following list:

IMPORTANT:

To complete the program, a visit to the monasteries of Nonantola and San Benedetto Po, as well as to the medieval parts of the cities of Modena and Mantua, will be organized.

Examination Methods

Oral examination (based on a written test to be completed) for the general part; Analysis of a historical source and relative collocation and explanation related to the subject of the monograph course.
The skills and knowledge acquired will be evaluated, especially in terms of conceptual and methodological aspects, as well as the ability to analyze sources and links.
