Learning objectives

The lessons provide an introductory survey of the history of the Greek ancient world, from the Mycenaean age to the Roman conquest, with particular care of geographical and institutional aspects. The lessons light up the role and the development of Greek civilization in the Mediterranean territories. After the course the students should be able to: -have a general overview of the main themes of Greek history; -understand and discuss institutional and political evolution of the Greek people.

Prerequisites and basic notions

High proficiency in oral and written Italian.

Program

History of the Ancient Greek World until the end of the Hellenistic Age (31 BCE):
The II millennium BCE; the Dark Ages; the Archiac Age; the polis; the Classical Age; Athens and Sparta; the decline of the polis; Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic kingdoms.
Compulsory reading:
M. Bettalli, A.L. D'Agata, A. Magnetto, Storia greca, Rome 2013 (or subsequent reprints).

Didactic methods

Frontal lectures (supported by use of ppt presentations, videos, etc.) will be accompanied by moments of reflection and debate with the students.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test, with closed and open questions. The questions will be about: the compulsory reading; the topics dealt with/discussed during lectures; and the additional materials uploaded by the lecturer on the Moodle platform. The test will be identical for both attending and non-attending students. The final mark will take place out of thirty.

Evaluation criteria

The written test will verify that the students have acquired a sound knowledge of the political, social, and cultural history of the Greek world, as well as an adequate ability to critically interpret historical facts.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Final grade: 30/30.
