Learning objectives

The course aims to direct the students into the set of problems relevant to the archaeological research in order to obtain theoretical knowledge of the methodological and technical fundamentals of Archaeology, to be improved additionally by practical exercises during field work and laboratory practises.
KNOWLEDGES: 1.To be familiar with interdisciplinary methods and approaches in Archaeology in order to read and understand the material culture data correctly.
2.To be aware of particular archaeological terminology of the field.
SKILLS: 1.To understand the principal techniques and strategies in stratigraphy of the archaeological diggings. 2.To use correctly particular archaeological terminology. 3. To learn the variety of archaeometrical approaches that are usually used in the archaeological research (as during the investigation of material culture evidence, landscapes, sites and so on).

Program

The course aims to illustrate the methods and approaches to be adopted in field research and in the historical elaboration and interpretation of archaeological data. On a general level, the main thematic blocks covered in class are illustrated:
- the methods and techniques of archaeological excavation;
- methods and techniques for the study of the territory (surface reconnaissance, remote sensing, etc.);
- archaeological survey, topographical survey and computerized data management;
- environmental archeology and the interaction between man and the environment;
- the archeology of architecture; - preventive archeology and public archeology.

Didactic methods

Face-to-face lectures are provided. One or more educational outings will be organized during the course. The teaching methods may vary according to the methods established by the university in consideration of any health emergency. The students of the course will be offered the opportunity to participate in summer excavation campaigns directed by the teacher in charge of the course or by other teachers of the Department. The lesson plans and other teaching material (.ppt or .pdf) will be made available through the e-learning platform

Learning assessment procedures

The exam includes an oral test in person.

Evaluation criteria

During the exam the student's degree of learning of the topics covered, the critical ability to make their own and re-elaborate the aforementioned topics and the property of language in presenting the contents will be assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be based on the result of the oral exam.
