Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to deepen the Roman urban culture in the imperial era, the understanding of the basic principles on which Roman society was based, the dialectic that linked the latter to the non-Roman societies, and the extension of Roman citizenship to the whole 'empire. The study will take into consideration documents relating to the change in the rights of cities, both in Italy and in the provinces. Students will be sent to the critical analysis of the documentary sources, both archaeological and literary or epigraphic.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Good oral and written comprehension and production skills in Italian.

Program

The course will focus on the salient events in Roman history, beginning with the foundation of the city of Rome in the age of kings and continuing with the history of its institutional development in the Republican era and its expansion into Italy and the Mediterranean. Then it will examine the imperial age and, finally, the late antique period. Particular space will be devoted to the discussion of the methodology of historical research and the use of ancient sources.

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons supported by the use of ppt presentations. Reading, discussion and debate of sources presented by the teacher in class.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be oral and will focus on the 90 questions uploaded to the course Moodle (approximately 2-3 questions chosen at random). Students must articulate their answers, citing, where possible, the sources examined during the course (works of art, inscriptions, coins, etc.) present in the PowerPoint presentations uploaded to Moodle. The exam is identical for both attending and non-attending students. The assessment is out of 30.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exam will assess knowledge of the main political, social and economic events relating to the Roman world, evaluating the student's ability to analyse and interpret historical sources for the study of Roman history.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be determined according to the following criteria:
- sufficient (18/30-23/30): superficial knowledge of the topics covered; incomplete preparation;
- satisfactory (24/30-27/30): adequate or good ability to orientate oneself and approach the topics of the programme with a critical sense;
- excellent (28/30-31/30): complete understanding of the topics covered and excellent critical thinking skills.
