Learning objectives

The course addresses the subject of the relationship that arose between man and the environement in ancient times, with particular reference to the Roman era.
The expected learning outcomes are: KNOWLEDGE: 1.Knowledge of the sources, tools and methodologies used in the reconstruction of the ancient environment with particular focus on road networks, agrarian organisation and urban development. 2. Knowledge of the influence of geographical factors on the origin and development of settlements and the environmental changes caused by man. SKILLS: 1.Correct use of basic archaeological terminology, particularly that related to the ancient landscape. 2.Application of an interdisciplinary methodological approach to the reading and interpretation of the ancient world. 3.Analysis and understanding of the main sources employed in historical/archaeological study (literary, epigraphic, material).

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites are required, but it is preferable to have basic knowledge of Roman history as well as basic notions of classical archeology.

Program

The first part of the course will address some general topics (roads, agricultural organization, settlements, resources), while the second part will explore these same topics in greater depth within the territorial context of Roman-era Venetia, including through their application in specific research projects by the teacher.

Didactic methods

The classroom meetings include lectures based on PowerPoint that will be provided online to students. Seminar activities are also planned in which students will be able to produce a small original research on a topic agreed with the teacher. Students will be offered the opportunity to participate in summer excavation campaigns directed by the teacher of the course.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be oral: some questions will be related to the first part, some to the second.

Evaluation criteria

The purpose of the exam is to verify the expected learning outcomes previously specified. The assessment will take into account knowledge, the ability to summarize, and the ability to use appropriate terminology.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will take into account the acquisition of knowledge and skills foreseen in the training objectives of the course.
