Learning outcomes

The course aims at giving knowledge of the phenomenon of tourism in its various aspects. The desire to discover has led man to move for different reasons: knowledge, faith, culture, health, fun. Different purposes, typologies and ways of moving in time and space have marked landscapes, relationships, cultures, arts and economics. This course aims at providing the conceptual, methodological and cultural bases needed to analyze and interpret the complex mosaic in which the different current forms of tourism are articulated. Going through the history of tourism the course highlights tourism as a constantly expanding economic activity, as well as the aspects and problems arising from the opposing need for enhancement and protection of environmental and cultural heritage.

Program

The course aims to systematize and synthesize the main themes of the Tourism geography.
The path starts with an overview of the subject of study and an accurate analysis of the aspects that qualify the tourist demand.
The territorial analysis approach through the most widespread simplified models, aims to highlight the spaces and territories of tourism.
As a first step, it is necessary to measure flows and quantities related to touristic supply and demand, in order to use an organic approach.
The elements related to globalization and sustainability issues will then be discussed, highlighting the need to adopt coherent destination management strategies.
Particular attention will be paid to the efficient and effective organization of the information obtained, to make it comparable over time and space.
A concrete case is provided by the approach proposed by the European Tourism Indicator System.
Finally, the analysis of the main problems in progress and of the possible initiatives that can be implemented, will lead to an indication of the new ways to relaunch the forms of traditional tourism (seaside, mountain, urban cultural), and at the same time highlights the trends in progress on those that can be considered - also in relation to the rapid and recent growth recorded - as new forms of tourism (agritourism, wellness tourism, congress, cruise), to finally highlight the new frontiers linked to the opportunities provided by the so-called sharing economy.

These are the issues that will be addressed:
General aspects about Tourism Geography
Tourism spaces and regional and organisational models
Transport analysis
Globalization
Touristic indicators and environmental impact
Destination management
The new forms of Tourism
Unesco heritage sites
