Learning objectives

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the discoveries, methodologies and other fundamental issues connected with ancient Near East archaeology and art, so that the student acquires the skills necessary to evaluate and chronologically and geographically contextualize the material expressions and the artistic manifestations of the near eastern civilizations, between prehistory and Hellenism. The course will deal also with contemporary history and current events to better understand how to promote and protect the archaeological and artistic heritage of the Near East.

Program

The first part of the course aims to provide a geographical and chronological framework necessary to understand the archeology of the ancient Near East, offering a general overview of the natural environment and the overall periodization. With these bases it will be possible to present the material culture and the artistic expressions that characterized the region over a period of time ranging from prehistory to the first millennium BC. IContemporary history and current issues will also be touched upon to better understand the dynamics of protection and enhancement of Near Eastern archaeological and artistic heritage.

Frontal lessons, supplemented seminar and laboratory.
