M-STO/02 - MODERN HISTORY
Period
2 A, 2 B
Learning objectives
The course - which is taught in English - aims to enable the student to understand the origins and the most significant developments of the concept of Renaissance, recognize important areas of historical experience that the research methods adopted for the study of that reality have allowed to highlight, and apply them to a particular theme. At the end of the course the student will be able to master the above described concepts and problems, by taking into account both the English and the Italian cultural and linguistic spheres
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge, at school level, of the main features of medieval and / or early modern history.
Program
Play, laughter and feast in the Renaissance.
Required reading:
Mikhail Bakhtin, Rabelais and His World;
Peter Burke, Play in Renaissance Italy.
Suggestions for further (optional) reading will be given during the course.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Lectures and possible exercises. The plan is to offer the course this year too in mixed mode, partly taught in English and partly in Italian. In any case, the student has the choice of the language in which to take the final exam.
Learning assessment procedures
Written questionnaire on the set texts, followed by an oral interview.
Evaluation criteria
The exam will aim to ascertain the students' degree of familiarity with the most significant problems and methods in Renaissance history, and their ability to contextualize, understand and discuss the reference texts.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The grade will be largely determined by the quality of the answers provided to the written questionnaire (on the basis of the criteria indicated above), directly assessed out of thirty; the interview is intended as a confirmation of the result, though an evaluation of its outcome can help retouch and determine the final grade.
