Learning outcomes

The Pleasures of the Imagination

The course will analyse the background of the 18th- and 19th-century concepts of the imagination and highlight the development towards a personal and unique subjective perception of the world which will justify the birth of the individualistic spirit characteristic of the pre-romantic and romantic period.

Program

The publication of Addison’s essays The Pleasures of the Imagination (1712) marks the development of the concept of ingeniousness into that of imagination. This evolution, present in the theoretical works of Addison, Coleridge and Wordsworth, will in due course ensue the emancipation from authority and justify the personal and unique reception of the world characteristic of the romantic concepts of the imagination.
