Learning outcomes

Acquisition of basic notions concerning the main social and cultural phenomena that have taken place in China in the last decades with a focus on the relationship between tradition and modernity. Through individual or group works, students will acquire skills in research methodologies and they will develop a critical approach.

Program

The course presents a general survey of topics relevant to understanding contemporary Chinese society and culture and its relation to institutions and cultures of the remote and recent past. The topics covered focus on aspects such as identity, the religious and philosophical spheres, political institutions and national and international policies, the family and gender relations, social organisation and the urban and rural contexts, the economy and labour, environmental issues, and the media. The presentation will be accompanied by the reading and analysis of documentary and critical sources in translation.One lesson will be devoted to the presentation of tools and bibliographic resources for the preparation of research papers in the field of Chinese studies.

Examination Methods

The examin consists of an oral interview aimed at determining the acquisition of the socio-cultural knowledge required, knowledge of the bibliographical sources and the assigned readings, and the ability to argue and analyse critically on the basis of the skills acquired during the course. Grades are measured in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
