Learning objectives

The course aims at providing students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce with an adequate knowledge of the Spanish culture of different periods, focusing on its literary, historical, geographical and anthropological aspects. At the end of the course, students will acquire a sound knowledge of the issues covered by the module (historical and cultural context, main writers/texts/movements/genres of the period examined). With regard to the applied and communication skills, students will be able to critically comment the primary texts listed in the syllabus, in relation both to their historical and cultural context and literary specificities, as well as to express the acquired knowlegde in a clear and consistent way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites required. However, even partial knowledge of the Spanish language is considered useful.

Program

The course will provide the coordinates for the knowledge of the main movements, authors and genres of Spanish literature between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing in particular on women's and conflict writings in different historical-social contexts and distinct literary forms (novel, short story, poetry, theater ). Parallel to the presentation of the historical-cultural context (the First Republic, the crisis of '98, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the Second Republic, the Franco dictatorship) and the main literary movements (Realism, Modernism, the Avant-garde, the Generation of '27), an in-depth study of fundamental texts of the period is envisaged with particular attention to the female figure and the links with expressive forms such as painting and cinema.
The program is divided into four parts:
Part I: The condition of women in turn-of-the-century literature
Emilia Pardo Bazán, “Il pizzo strappato”, 1886 (two stories chosen by the student)
Part II: Poetic voices between Modernism and the Avant-garde dawn of the Civil War (an anthological selection by the teacher)
Part III: Paths of eroticism and violence in Lorca's dramatic work
Federico García Lorca, “Nozze di Sangue”, 1933 (complete reading)
Part IV: The Spanish novel of contemporaneity (one complete reading chosen by the student)

A detailed summary of the topics covered, together with the complete calendar of teaching activities, will be indicated at the beginning of the course. The history of literature manuals and the scheduled texts will be indicated by the teacher and available at the University Libraries.

Didactic methods

Teaching will be held in Italian through frontal teaching and case studies. The teaching will also be active on the university's e-learning platform, where some mandatory content and optional in-depth materials will be uploaded. This program is also valid for non-attending students, who, however, are advised to contact the teacher during office hours. An individual reception service managed by the teacher is available throughout the academic year, at the times indicated on the web pages (without the need to make a specific appointment) and constantly updated. Students who find themselves in the position of having to make up for missed lessons will be able to contact the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam takes place orally in Italian and consists of an interview aimed at verifying the depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired, the analytical and argumentative ability, and the ownership of language. The topics being tested concern the entire program. There is an informal and optional written test regarding the topics of history and history of literature (open questions and multiple choice tests). For those who obtain a positive result in this test, the oral exam will focus solely on the commentary on the texts (contextualization and analysis).

Evaluation criteria

The depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired, the analytical and argumentative ability, the ability to connect the different topics covered in the course, the ownership of language and the clarity of presentation will be evaluated.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be the one resulting from the oral interview as a whole, based on the partial grade and the evaluation criteria set out above, and will be expressed out of thirty.
