Learning objectives

To acquire knowledge about: - authors, works, texts and cultural or literary contexts; some texts among the most important for the national literary identity; - resources needed to comprehend and interpretate texts; - the theme of the relationship between writing and landscape. To acquire competences in: - reading poetry, also in an intertextual view. At the end of the course students will be able to put the texts known in the adequate cultural context, and to analyze them focusing on the main formal aspects, main themes and the dynamic relationship that connects these two levels.

Program

From Indifference to Boredom: Moravia and the Crisis of the Bourgeoisie in the First Half of the Twentieth Century. This course addresses the decline of the bourgeoisie in the first half of the twentieth century through the narrative work of Alberto Moravia. The key concepts of indifference and boredom will be analyzed as symptoms of an existential, ethical, and social crisis, highlighting the critical function of literature with respect to bourgeois models. The principal texts, which will be read almost in their entirety, will be: • Gli indifferenti (1929), Moravia's debut novel and manifesto of a new bourgeois malaise; • La noia (1960), in which apathy becomes a loss of meaning and an inability to relate. These will be complemented by scattered readings of other novels and essays by Moravia. References to the historical and cultural context of the post-war period, social transformations, and changes in the representation of the individual will also be considered. Critical readings and interdisciplinary insights (cinema, art) will round out the course. Non-attending students will be required to read "Gli indifferenti", "La noia", e "Il conformista"

Didactic methods

Teaching Methodology Teaching will be structured through lectures and interactive or flipped classroom sessions. The lectures will introduce the historical-literary context and the main thematic focuses of Moravian work, offering guidance on critical reading of the texts. These will occasionally be accompanied by short presentations of texts by students, aimed at actively re-elaborating the content and developing argumentative skills. Textual analyses will focus on selected significant passages from Gli indifferenti and La noia, with attention to: • style • narrative voice • character development • social representation. Student discussion and the development of personal reflections on the texts read will be encouraged, including through stimulating questions and guided discussions.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of a written test covering the topics covered in class. Objectives: Students are required to have knowledge of the topics covered in class and a familiarity with the relevant literature. The objective of the test is to demonstrate the student's ability to analyze the novels read and discussed during the course, including through references to the relevant critical literature. Exam Structure: The test consists of two open-ended questions. Grading: The score is expressed out of 30. Duration: 2 hours.

Evaluation criteria

The exam will assess the student's ability to present the topics covered during the lectures, comment on the texts, and discuss the relevant critical bibliography.
