Learning objectives

This course introduces to some voices and aspects of modern and contemporary French literature in order to develop critical readings of relevant literary texts in relation to social, economic and artistic changes in the recent history of French culture. At the end of this course, students shall therefore acquire knowledge in French cultural history, along with the ability of applying such knowledge to critical readings of relevant literary texts concerning the identitarian, relational, historical, cultural, social and economical issues the course deals with.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Both highly recommended, the achievement of the linguistic certification and the passing of the French language 1 exam are not mandatory requirements to access the exam.

Program

Writings of exclusion and imprisonment
In the context of the new forms of implication, i.e. immersion in the surrounding reality and political commitment, which characterize today's literary landscape, a theoretical-critical framework will be provided on the writings of marginality, (dis)integration, and socio-cultural exclusion, with particular regard to the highly topical question of the urban suburbs, to then focus on the writings of and from prison (testimonial and investigative literature , reportage and creative re-elaboration of the experience of the detainees and of those who carry out cultural initiatives with them) and on the practices connected to them (reading and writing workshops, theatrical activities, etc.).
Among others, texts by Ahmed Djouder, Faïza Guène, François Bon, Annie Leclerc, Jane Sautière, Olivia Rosenthal, Joseph Ponthus, Samuel Gallet, Philippe Claudel, Annie Ernaux, Maylis de Kerangal.
The course, as well as the final oral exam, are held in Italian on texts in French.
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate their ability to contextualize and critically comment on all the literary texts addressed with respect to the topics covered during the course.
Detailed program, with list of literary texts and other materials (including supplementary readings for those who do not attend the lessons), as well as precise indications concerning the exam, will be provided at the beginning and during the course.

Didactic methods

In-person teaching. Integrated into the course, the exercises will be dedicated to the participatory reading of various texts in the program.
The supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the teaching Moodle platform. For any other information regarding the course, including the contents of any missed lessons, the teacher is available via email or during office hours.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral interview on the topics and texts the course deals with.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The following will be assessed: the completeness of the required knowledge, the precision and clarity of the presentation, the expressive reading in French, the mastery of the readings in the programme, as well as the ability to elaborate a critical argument in this regard.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is given by the skills demonstrated during the exam.
