Learning objectives

The course leads the students to learn the basic features of the cultural and literary history of Russia. At the end of the course, students must be able to: 1) know the most important moments in Russia’s history and the basic elements of russian modern culture, with specific reference to the XIX century; 2) apply the acquired knowledge in the analysis of the text studied during the lessons, using the supplied critical bibliography. 3) develop independent opinions concerning the fundamental topics addressed during the course and to express them in a coherent and correct way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prior knowledge is required. This exam cannot be taken before having passed required Saperi Minimi.

Program

The course unfolds in the following subject:
1) Brief historical introduction with particular reference to the history of the Eastern Slavs and the birth and development of the Russian Empire;
2) Rereading of the classics today through different critical approaches;
3) The literature and dynamics of Russian imperial culture in the 19th century, with particular reference to its colonial dimension and relationship to Ukrainian identity and culture.
The following literary texts will be examined:
1. A.S. Puškin, Kavkazskij plennik (Il prigioniero del Caucaso); Bachčisarajskij fontan (La fontana di Bachčisaraj);
2. N.V. Gogol’, Mërtvye duši (Anime Morte) (selezione di capitoli);
3. F.M. Dostoevskij, Son smešnogo čeloveka (Il sogno di un uomo ridicolo);
4. L.N. Tolstoj, Smert’ Ivana Il’iča (La morte di Ivan Il’ič);
5. A.P. Čechov, Dama s sobačkoj (La signora con il cagnolino).
Students are required to read the texts COMPLETELY for the exam.

Didactic methods

Teaching mode: frontal lessons, e-learning
Other materials will be provided on the course e-learning page.
Non-attending students are required to agree with the lecturer to read three critical essays related to the course topic.
Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses.
Tutoring activities for both attending and non-attending students will be scheduled during the course (see Moodle webpage).
Specific support and tutoring activities are available for inclusion and accessibility, with particular regard to the Language and Literature courses in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. The activities will take place from October 2024. More information will be available on the Department's webpage.

Learning assessment procedures

For attendings students (optional):
1) evaluation of the activities carried out during the classes (see Moodle page);
2) intermediate evaluation;
3) oral examination.
For non-attending students:
- oral examination.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The assessment will consider the following criteria:
- Content accuracy and completeness
- Achievement of adequate analysis abilities
- Clarity in the exposition, arguing ability, and knowledge of the subject-specific lexicon.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

For attending students (optional), the final mark, out of 30, will be the sum of the three parts of the examination (10/30 for the activities carried out during the classes, 10/30 for the in-progress test and 10/30 for the oral).
For non-attending students, the final mark (oral exam) is out of 30.
