Learning objectives

In accordance with the specificities of the course of study, lessons aim at providing information and critical analysis concerning French history and culture. The course will equally focus on deepening the interrelation existing between society, culture and literature taking into consideration literary texts by representative authors. Lessons will be held in French. The critical bibliography is also in foreign language. This will contribute to improve the students' language skills. At the end of the lessons, students will acquire socio-cultural, historical and literary knowledge specific to the chosen tourist and commercial orientation. They will also demonstrate that they can apply, in an autonomous way and in French, the acquired knowledge to the analysis of literary texts concerning the central subject of the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Having passed the first year French language and literature and culture exams.

Program

At the theatre, in Paris
First part: at the theater
Starting with a summary introduction to theater studies and from a perspective which favors the history of ideas and French society, we will mainly concentrate on the following plays: Dom Juan by Molière, Cyrano by Bergerac by Rostand, and Rhinoceros by Ionesco. Screenings of performance recordings will accompany the presentation and analysis of the texts.
Second part: in Paris
Startig with a quick a topographical and historical and cultural overview of the capital of France (consultation of a guide and brief history of the city will be delegated to individual study), we will address the emergence, in the 19th century and particularly in Baudelaire's works in verse and prose, of a key figure in the literary myth of Paris, that of the flâneur.
Moreover, we will follow the movements, by metro or other means of public transport, of certain contemporary peri-urban and post-industrial strollers, such as Augé, Ernaux, Rolin, Vasset.

Didactic methods

In-person lessons.
All materials used during the lessons will be uploaded to the Moodle platform, as well as some supplementary readings for those who do not attend the lessons. The teacher is available by email or during office hours, also for any missed lessons. Students unable to attend the course and Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher. Finally, potential interested parties are informed that the support and tutoring activities for inclusion and accessibility (from November 2024 to June 2025) will be advertised on the Department page, in particular for the courses of Language and Literature in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas.

Learning assessment procedures

Final oral interview on the topics and texts scheduled.
A written intermediate test (reserved for those attending the course and optional) will consist of a commentary, in French, on an extract from one of the scheduled theatrical texts and will last one hour and 30 minutes. Passing the intermediate test will exempt you from taking the first part of the program to the oral exam.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The following will be evaluated: the completeness of the expected knowledge, the precision and clarity of exposition, the expressive reading, the mastery of all the scheduled readings, as well as the ability to develop a critical argument in this regard.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Only for those who take and pass the intermediate test, the final grade will be given 50% by the score of the intermediate written test, 50% by that of the final oral test.
