Learning objectives

At the end of the course students are expected to: 1) know the most important moments and the main peculiarities of the Russian History, as well as the essential elements of 20thcentury ; 2) apply the acquired knowledge to the analysis of the literary works presented during the classes, with the help of the provided critical references; 3) have the ability to formulate autonomous judgments about the main themes of the course, and to explain them in a correct and coherent form.

Prerequisites and basic notions

This exam cannot be taken before having passed the following exams: Russian culture and literature 1 and Russian language 1.

Program

The course is designed as a critical journey through 20th century Russian and Soviet history and culture, with an emphasis on the post-Soviet period. The course is also designed to encourage students to reflect on issues of urgent contemporary concern in the light of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The course unfolds in the following subject:
1) A brief introduction to the history of the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia in the twentieth century.
2) Soviet Repressions and the GULAG: the struggle for memory in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods and the rewriting of history in contemporary Russia.
3) The intergenerational transmission of trauma in Soviet cinema of the 1980s.
4) Memory and dystopia in twentieth-century Russian literature.
5) The USSR as empire: the Soviet experience from a postcolonial perspective.
6) The Dynamics of Identity in Post-Soviet Literatures.

Non-attending students are required to agree with the lecturer to read three critical essays related to the course topic.

Didactic methods

Teaching mode: frontal lessons, e-learning
Other materials will be provided on the course e-learning page.
Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses.
Tutoring activities for both attending and non-attending students will be scheduled during the course (see Moodle webpage).
Specific support and tutoring activities are available for inclusion and accessibility, with particular regard to the Language and Literature courses in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. The activities will take place from November 2024. More information will be available on the Department's webpage.

Learning assessment procedures

For attendings students (optional):
1) evaluation of the activities carried out during the classes (see Moodle page);
2) intermediate evaluation;
3) oral examination.
For non-attending students:
- oral examination.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The assessment will consider the following criteria:
- Content accuracy and completeness
- Achievement of adequate analysis abilities
- Clarity in the exposition, arguing ability, and knowledge of the subject-specific lexicon.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

For attending students (optional), the final mark, out of 30, will be the sum of the three parts of the examination (10/30 for the activities carried out during the classes, 10/30 for the in-progress test and 10/30 for the oral).
For non-attending students, the final mark (oral exam) is out of 30.
