Learning objectives

The aims of this course are to enable students to develop and consolidate the understanding of the syntactic and lexical-semantic aspects of contemporary English. C1 level (listening comprehension and reading comprehension) is a prerequisite for the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Students can take the exam only after having obtained the computer-based C1 language competence certification and having previously taken and passed the English Language 1 and English Literature and Culture 1 exams.
Please note that the computer-based C1 certification is valid for one year. The C1 certification is valid for three years.
Students in possession of external language certificates are invited to obtain the CLA equivalence certificate before the exam date.

Program

The course will cover the following topics:
1. Syntax
- Definitions, sentence analysis
- Words, word classes and syntagms
- Clauses and sentences
2. Semantics
- Main definitions, words and their meaning
- The structure of the English lexicon
- Levels of meanings
The contents and reference bibliography are the same for attending and non-attending students. Non-attending students are however invited to contact the teacher for clarifications on the programme and on the preparation for the exam.

Didactic methods

Lectures and practical exercises in English. Attendance and active participation in class are strongly recommended. The materials used in class will be made available on the Moodle platform. Students are invited to contact the teacher via email or office hours for any clarifications on the topics covered in class.
Teaching support methods: Supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform of the course. Students who may miss classes are invited to contact the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam on the topics covered in class, lasting one hour. The written test will consist of open questions and multiple choice questions aimed at ascertaining knowledge of the contents covered during the lessons. Multiple choice questions will evaluate students' theoretical knowledge; open-ended questions will evaluate students' ability to apply their knowledge to the analysis of texts.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Testing theoretical notions and their application in exercises.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade of the exam will be the average of the grade of the written exam and the grade obtained in the CLA computerized test. The latter will be converted into thirtieths according to the CLA conversion table.
Students in possession of external language certificates are invited to obtain the CLA equivalence certificate before the exam date.
